emily ~ a hopeFULL rocking chair
I name my pieces. It's a random process, unique with each project. My most recent make the ordinary extraordinary project -- a commission from a happy heart -- came with no strings attached. I love the confidence and trust in the words, "Do what you do!"The woman honoring me with this commission is gifting the chair to someone very dear. Instead of asking about color preferences, I asked her,
"What's one word that can guide my work?"
Without hesitating she replied,
"Hope!"
Words are right next to color as favorites in my creative toolbox. Hope rolled around in my heart and up bubbled the poem ~
“Hope” is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the soul -
And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at all -
*
And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard -
And sore must be the storm -
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm -
*
I’ve heard it in the chillest land -
And on the strangest Sea -
Yet - never - in Extremity,
It asked a crumb - of me.

And so, Emily. As I poured on the love and the paint, Emily the Rocker -- unlike the little Bird, asked for more. More color, more joy, more love. And I gave it to her. Here she is from start to finish.
